CANTO XI - Structure of Hell

Dante and Virgil take a break before proceeding to the seventh circle of Hell, overwhelmed by the stench around them. Dante learns about the general structure of Hell and the levels of sin and punishment based upon philosophy and theology. Each sin becomes graver as they approach the bottom circle, reserved for traitors against those who trusted them. Dante views betrayal as the worst possible crime, dishonoring universal love and virtue.
