CANTO XII Part 2 - Phlegethon and The Centaurs

According to Greek mythology, Phlegethon, an infernal river of boiling blood, punished those who shed the blood of others while alive. Dante's seventh circle consisted of three rings, the outermost ring housing souls who committed violence against their neighbors and were condemned to writhe in the river for eternity. The centaurs, half human and half horse, fiercely guarded the ring.
