CANTO XXXII - Treachery

In the ninth circle of Hell, reserved for treacherous individuals, there is a frozen lake called Cocytus that represents the heart hardened by hatred. The sinners are divided into four layers of treachery. The first layer, Caina, houses those who betrayed their blood relatives. In the second layer, Antenora, souls who betrayed their country are trapped in ice up to their necks.
