German born Alex Kofuu Reinke Horikitsune was for a long time the only and first European who was taken in as an apprentice of a traditional Japanese craftsmanship family, lead by the world famous Irezumi artist Horiyoshi III of Yokohama, Japan. Today he is his senior apprentice. Horikitsune, just like his master, only produces traditional Japanese Irezumi Tattoos. By end of 2015 he will be active in this craft for 20 years. He was interested in Japanese culture, its arts and Zen since his early teens, which helped tremendously throughout his journey in Japan. Ordained as a zen monk in 2011 he likes to concentrate on buddhist images in his art, like the kannon fox you can see here in his collaboration with the Raking Light Projects.
